Texas is notorious for brutally hot summers, but winter weather in the Lone Star State can be just as extreme. And even worse, most areas in Texas are not equipped to deal with the hazards present during bouts of snow and ice. One cold snap and practically the whole state can shut down.
However, in many cases, you’ll still have to go to work (unless the weather is extremely severe) and face many dangers along the way. This causes problems for everyone who cannot work from home, but it particularly affects individuals who work outdoors, such as construction workers and transportation workers. Some of the dangers you may face if you leave your home during these times include:
- Car collisions: Snow increases the time it takes to reach a full stop, while ice causes skidding. Whether you’re simply driving to work or you drive as part of your job, any amount of time spent on the road during poor winter conditions is dangerous. Avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration; keep all movements steady and gradual to minimize your chances of sliding. Do not drive on highways, bridges or overpasses if you don’t have to. If you’re unfamiliar with such driving conditions, practice in an empty parking lot to a get a feel for how your car handles.
- Icy pavement: Sidewalks, roads and driveways can be extremely slippery when coated with ice. Take extreme caution when walking around outside during poor winter conditions, particularly in areas that haven’t been treated with sand or salt. If you do slip and fall, get the attention of a nearby person for assistance, whether you simply need a lift back up or medical attention.
- Extreme cold: Prolonged exposure to very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia or frostbite. Always dress in layers when going outside, including boots, hat, scarf and gloves. If you notice a person shaking uncontrollably, turning blue and/or babbling incoherently, call 911 immediately. While you wait, try to warm the person up with hot, non-alcoholic beverages and layers of dry clothing/blankets.
If winter related injuries occur while you’re working, you may be entitled to file a worker’s compensation and auto insurance claim. Benefits can cover medical expenses and lost wages during recovery.
